From January 14 to February 4 of 2002, the Lobo Theatre
Corporation presented the play "Orphans" written
by Lyle Kessler at the Urban Stages in New York City, New
York. It is a play whose central idea is compassion.
We strove to explore this idea and show what happens when
human beings are deprived of compassion, when compassion
is not given, what changes occur when compassion is given
and then refused, and when compassion is given and then
taken away. We believe that this theme is relevant today
in a community in which we have traded compassion for comfort
and trust for fear.
Lobo Theatre Corporation was involved in every stage of
pre-production for its premier production. The designers
and director collaborated on the physical production, while
management staffed the production and secured the props
and stage required. The director and actors were involved
in exploratory rehearsals, set and dress rehearsals.
We believe that this first production is an example of our
activity as a non-profit community theatre based on the
collaboration of participants from all aspects within theatre,
the vehicle we created to present an author’s views
on compassion, and the various types of personal commitments
that each participant made to bring this work to life for
the community audience to experience.
